The invitation landed on her desk, a crisp white rectangle amidst the clutter of unpaid bills and overdue library books. Sarah stared at it, the words "10-Year High School Reunion" blurring slightly. A headache throbbed behind her eyes, a dull percussion against the quiet of her apartment. She sighed, a long, slow exhalation that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand unanswered emails. The thought of small talk and forced smiles felt like an impossible summit to climb.

She pushed the invitation aside, the movement making her shoulders ache. The pile of laundry on the chair seemed mountainous, the sink overflowing with dishes. The fluorescent light in the kitchen flickered, a tiny, annoying glitch in her already frayed existence. "Maybe next year," she muttered to the empty room, her voice raspy and devoid of enthusiasm.
